My final year dissertation was a feature-length screenplay. This meant a lot of self-motivated independent study. Using what I had learned about critical thinking, creative thinking and studying over the past three years, I implemented this into my screenwriting project
I strongly believe that screenwriting is 10% writing and 90% thinking. The typing is the easy part; it’s the structuring , routing out clichés and any logic problems that is the challenge, but also the fun part. It’s like wiring a huge circuit board to try to get all the pieces together to work!
Writing a feature length screenplay has taught me about how to stay more disciplined, focused, organised and be efficient in my processes. I have found that re-reading my script every few days can bring with it improve dialogue and removing unnecessary words to make the script flow even better. I’ve used my own initiative when it came to structuring my idea in isolation, but also utilising the help and resources around me for feedback.
Although some elements of scripts are bound to change during the writing stage, the most important part is prior to writing the script. I’ve learned spending more time on the planning stage is vital because one plot hole can lead to a tower of cards falling!
Self-evaluating, self-editing and receiving feedback for my feature length screenplay has helped me in my personal development as a screenwriter.
Also I’ve improved with my editorial flair and literary skills when writing my feature length screenplay.
