I also learned about the theory within screenwriting such as Vogler’s Hero’s Journey and John Truby’s 22 Steps.

At first, I was concerned about screenwriting becoming too formulaic, and not creative. However, I understood the reasons behind using structure; while they are not a mandatory ‘I must do this guide’, they provide pointers in a good direction for a fulfilling story arc, audience satisfactory and emotional experience. This hunger and desire to learn the craft and development process of structure has helped me greatly and will continue to do so when writing.

Another part of my screenwriting course was essay writing. I learned techniques throughout the years such as learning how to effectively research for my essays through using academic books and journals.

By the third year I had a good technique whereby I would choose an essay question and specifically research on that essay question subject and write down the quotes as I went along. When it came to organising and structuring my essay it was much easier!
