In my module for campaign writing I was given briefs with very small budgets to create advertising campaigns.
For my charity campaign I was pushed to my creativity in storytelling limits, which was a great opportunity to explore ways to keep costs low, but also think about how despite the low budget that I can create an emotionally gripping story to engage the audience in a call to action.
I also considered budgets when writing my dissertation screenplay while keeping within the framework of an idea I wanted to work on and would want to watch. I know spec scripts are the hardest to sell; so I kept in mind that having a spec script with a production budget of $250 million versus $1 million, the $1 million spec script is more likely to be produced. But the writing must be great, of course!
Thinking numbers alongside creativity has been vital to me in understanding the many different clogs within the business of film!
